Over the past month, YouTube and its content creators have been a topic of major controversy within the mainstream media. This all has been stemming from the news outlet The Wall Street Journal, who has been consistent at being the start of most of the YouTube drama.
The beginning of the beef started about a month ago, when the Wall Street Journal released an article on YouTube’s most subscribed user “PewDiePie” making wild accusations about him being an anti-Semite and an active Nazi advocate. This took quite a toll on the popular YouTuber, making him lose major contract deals with huge companies as well as YouTube canceling the production of his new show. Many came to his aide in criticizing the news outlet giant, putting a smudge over their credibility in the overall eyes of the public. This was not enough, however, because they came back with more YouTube attacking articles only a couple of weeks later. The main focus of these was that YouTube was allowing major companies such as Coca-Cola, Nike, and Amazon to have ads on videos with extremely inappropriate content. This could not be further from the truth as YouTube has a very complex system in place to make sure this exact thing does not happen, but none the less these accusations had quite the effect. Companies started dropping from YouTube like flies, making many YouTubers have little to no money made from any of their content. There has been an even bigger outrage to these events as this time a large number of people were affected, starting the ongoing war between YouTube and the Wall Street Journal.
Efforts at banding together to take legal action towards the Wall Street Journal are being made; however, it doesn’t seem like there are many options on countering the news giant. I really hope that something can be done to compensate some of the YouTubers who are losing a lot of money from these claims, and that once the claims have been busted some of the larger companies will make their way back to the content creators.
