From Kendrick Lamar to Drake to Lana Del Ray, the summer of 2017 was filled with many new song releases from some of today’s most popular artists. These songs were played countless times throughout the summer; some maybe even a little too much.

The summer started off hot with the release of Kendrick Lamar’s new album DAMN. Plenty of the songs remained in the top charts for weeks including “HUMBLE,” “DNA,” and “ELEMENT.” It’s no surprise Kendrick’s new songs were so popular as all his albums have been critically acclaimed, he is considered by many to be one of the greatest rappers of our generation. Another one of the biggest rappers of our generation, Drake, dropped an album earlier this year with many of his songs being played throughout the summer. Drake’s album, More Life, had features from many big artists including Quavo, Travis Scott, 2 Chainz, and Skepta producing hit songs like “Portland,” “Sacrifices,” “Do Not Disturb,” and “Fake Love.” More Life was yet another impressive album for Drake, but some fans disliked the British grime style of many songs on the album as they felt it didn’t fit well with his rap style. Also in the rap genre 2 Chainz, Meek Mill, Lil Uzi Vert, and Tyler, the Creator released some hit songs. 2 Chainz released his album Pretty Girls Like Trap Music with the popular song “It’s a Vibe” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, Trey Songz, and Jhene Aiko. This catchy song has a good beat along with strong verses from 2 Chainz and Ty Dolla $ign paired with a catchy hook from Trey Songz and Jhene Aiko. Meek Mill also released an album with popular songs “Wins and Losses,” and “Whatever You Need featuring Chris Brown.” Tyler, the Creator released his album Flower Boy with popular songs “Who Dat Boy” featuring A$AP Rocky, “See You Again” featuring Kali Uchis, and “911/ Mr. Lonely” featuring Frank Ocean and Steve Lacy. Tyler proved once again that he is a strong pair with both A$AP Rocky and Frank Ocean.

The pop genre also had many popular songs released the summer. Calvin Harris released two hit songs, “Feels” featuring Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, and Big Sean and “Slide” featuring Frank Ocean and Migos. Both songs were upbeat with catchy tunes. DJ Khaled also released some hit songs from his new album Grateful, including “I’m the One” featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne and “Wild Thoughts” featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller. With DJ Khaled’s beats and these star-studded features, it’s no surprise the songs were so popular. And with Justin Bieber features comes probably the most popular song of the summer, “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber. Whether you loved this song or hated it after hearing it on the radio every day, there’s no doubt the song was played many times throughout the summer. The music video for the song even became the most viewed video on YouTube. Lana Del Rey also released an album this summer with many popular songs. “My favorite song of the summer was ‘Summer Bummer’ by Lana Del Rey because it really got me in the summer mood,” says senior Kayce Rhoden. These songs dominated the pop genre this summer.

There were many good songs released this summer in both the rap and pop genre and whether you liked or disliked all these songs, there’s no doubt you heard plenty of them on the radio throughout the summer of 2017.
