Feel-good shows to watch

Marley Burwell, Features Editor

We all feel sad and get down sometimes. When this happens, distractions are a must to keep your mind occupied from whatever is bothering you. One great distraction is watching TV. It can’t be a sad or drama-filled show to cheer you up. It has to be a fun, lighthearted feel-good show. The following shows are some favorites that will be sure to cheer you up.

  1. The Good Place-  This show is extremely funny and lighthearted, which is surprising since all of the characters are dead. The shows main character, Eleanor, played by Kristen Bell, was mistakenly put in “The Good Place” when she died. This place is for people who did good in their lives and were genuinely nice, charitable, and unproblematic when they were living. Eleanor was none of those things when she was alive. Throughout the first season, Eleanor tried to hide the fact that she is supposed to be in “The Bad Place” with the help of her friends Chidi, Tahani, and Jason from Florida (who was also not supposed to be in the Good Place. This show is filled with jokes and comedic moments, but still manages to have an intense plot-twist at the end of the first season. This show is one that I highly recommend.
  2. Parks and Rec- Most people have already heard of this mockumentary type television show. It is known for the incredible jokes while also having a good and solid plot-line. The series follows Leslie Knope, a hardworking and confident woman working in the Parks and Recreation department in Pawnee, Indiana. Leslie has big dreams for the department and herself. With an all-star cast including Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, and Aubrey Plaza, jokes with amazing delivery and great comedic timing are in abundance. A lot of people see it as a rip-off of The Office, but it is created by the same people so that can’t even be true. In my opinion, it is actually funnier than The Office.
  3. Bob’s Burgers- For fans of animation, this is a must watch. It is about the Belcher family, their burger joint, and the antics they get up to. The combination of the unique animation and the even more unique choice of voices, the atmosphere created is comical and makes you feel good. There is an abundance of amazing characters that always have the best lines. Tina Belcher is one such character. The writers should really be commended for how well-written the scripts are. This show is soon to be in its tenth production cycle. The longevity of it proves that the show has good ratings and a dedicated fanbase. It’s definitely a show to watch when feeling blue.
  4. Brooklyn 99- This is a show about police officers in the 99th precinct in Brooklyn, New York. The premise might seem boring, but it is actually extremely funny. One of the main characters, Jake Peralta, played by Andy Samberg, is a perfect mix of comedy and realistic life. Notable for a diverse cast, this show is not one to be missed. There are tons of running gags, such as a car thief named Doug Judy and a Halloween heist episode that happens every year. The show is a bit ridiculous, but that’s what makes it so special. In a world where cops are a touchy subject, this show does a great job of portraying a precinct, even though a precinct probably isn’t as fun. This show has such a cult following that when Fox cancelled it, NBC picked it up less than 24 hours later. This show is one that should be devoured.
