Billie Eilish, Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa. This is a list of artists who you would probably anticipate a 13-year-old girl to listen to because of the feminine themes and undertones. Frankly, I am sick of this stigma and I am here to let the boys know that it is okay to blast female pop singers anywhere.

As a young male I feel pressured to listen to only rap or classic rock. When I turn on my favorite Ariana Grande bangers in the car while a lady is present, I find myself being immediately accosted. Embarrassed, I immediately switch it to something more masculine like Travis Scott and while “Sicko Mode” can often really get me going, sometimes I need a little bit of “7 Rings” in my life and having to revert to my masculinity can really bum me out. Therefore, I am writing this article to get guys jazzed up about listening to pop music.

The fact of the matter is that pop music is good and fun to listen to. The pop in pop music stands for popular music and it is popular because it sounds great. Say what you will about the substance of the music, but the beats are catchy and it gets the listener pumped up. I still don’t know the words to Dua Lipa’s “One Kiss,” but when it starts pumping through the YMCA’s gym, I get amped up and blast through another couple of reps. If I lack the motivation to do some school work, all it takes is a little Camila Cabello to get through the lag.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a hip-hop enthusiast and listen to all forms of the genre. But, at a certain time enough is just enough. The lyrics and flow of MF DOOM or A$AP Rocky can be rejuvenating and thought provoking, but they can also be a difficult listen. The rhythm and beats of pop is always refreshing and light and you can really listen to it any time because it is so versatile.

In conclusion, guys, don’t let the social stigma of pop music being for girls hold you back. Pop music is extremely great to listen to and you should not feel shame for poppin’ off to some great pop music. Listen to whatever music you want to, but just remember you don’t have to hide your love for pop music because other guys are out there.
