2018 can be remember for the stream of instant rap hits put out by an array of musical artists, notably Travis Scott, Lil Wayne, Post Malone, and of course, Drake. From “In My Feelings” to “Mo Bamba” to “Sicko Mode”, each of these songs, and numerous others, will be played for decades to come. So what can be expected in 2019?

What not to expect:

  • New music by the artists that made 2018 so great, except Drake. Both Travis Scott and Lil Wayne dropped highly anticipated albums that took long periods of time to produce, especially Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter V” which was rumored to have been produced years before its release, but was held up in the permissions process. Don’t expect these artists to attempt to go back to back on albums, but they could of course be featured on other artists’ songs. As for Drake, well, he’s always releasing new music, so don’t expect him to take a year off. While a new album is unlikely, a few new singles that skyrocket all the way to the top of the charts seem almost guaranteed at this point in Drake’s reign as the most popular rapper in the world.
  • Similar music to last year. If you want the same vibe that you got all of last year from artists, well I’m here to tell you that you’re not going to get it. Many artists use new styles in each new set of music they produce and many times, these new styles seem weird and they do not receive a lot of support. However, after some time, these new styles often gain support and become very popular. An example of this was when Kendrick Lamar dropped his album, “Damn”, which was initially described as a disappointment compared to his other albums, but now is considered one of Lamar’s best. So be ready to hear new sounds that you may of never thought you’d hear before, but who knows maybe you’ll like it.

What to expect:

  • New music from some artists that are due for some new music. Speaking of Kendrick Lamar, his fans are dying for a new album, and this year could be the year. It normally takes artists around two to three years to produce a new album, and it has been nearly two years since “Damn” was dropped, thus prompting speculation that a new album is close. There have been rumors of a collaboration with J. Cole, which have been around for years, but the two rappers recently confirmed they would like to collaborate, so maybe it will finally come to light this year. There are also a few more artists two or three years removed from a past album release, of course leading to fans asking whether new music is coming. Big Sean released “I Decided” two years ago, Chance the Rapper released “Coloring Book” three years ago, and Kanye West released “The Life of Pablo”, his last major album, three years ago. Of the three, only Chance has confirmed a date on their next release, with him planning on releasing his first official album in the first week of July.
  • New artists who have a one-hit wonder. As seen by “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and “Mo Bamba” by Sheck Wes, every year new rapper will arise out of nowhere and create a song to be played on repeat on all radio stations.

Hopefully 2019 can keep up with the incredible success of songs put out in 2018, and maybe even surpass it. With the way music has impacted pop culture, especially recently, who knows what dances and sayings will be seen soon, and it all starts with the music that is produced.
