Why does Netflix remove the best shows and movies?

Netflix must rotate shows in and out to keep things interesting, but why do they take off the best ones?

Picture this. You’re halfway through watching your favorite series and the next day you look it up and it is just gone. Yes, this has happened to me before. Netflix has a habit of adding and removing shows and movies (usually the good ones). Very popular shows and movies such as Friends, Gossip Girl, The Office, Friday Night Lights (which has recently come back to Netflix), The Grinch (a popular holiday favorite), and other fan favorites have all been removed at some point. But for what reason?

From a legal perspective, Netflix comments on this saying, “Netflix licenses TV shows and movies from studios around the world. Though we strive to keep the titles you want to watch, some titles do leave Netflix because of licensing agreements. Whenever a TV show or movie license is expiring, we consider things such as: Are the rights to the title still available?” Even a majority of Netflix Originals leave because they are” not owned by Netflix. Instead, they’re distributed internationally exclusively by Netflix for a fixed period of time” (What’s on Netflix). Netflix is currently paying between “$100 and $250 million for blockbuster movies, while popular TV shows with multiple seasons have budgets that range from $300 to $500 million,” which seems pretty insane and explains why Netflix may not keep your favorite series (Fictionhorizon).

With this being said, I’m sure that Netflix can see the stats of who is watching what; if people are watching more of something, why wouldn’t they push to keep it? By keeping said entertainment, wouldn’t it make sense that users will remain the site this way? Netflix does, however, allow you to submit online up to three series or movies to request to put on Netflix or to request to bring back to Netflix. Simply “log in to your Netflix account, navigate to the Help Center and follow the link to suggest more titles” (Wikihow). Netflix also confirms this on their website explaining that you can not only request TV shows or movies, but you can also find out why a specific title is no longer available to watch on Netflix. It is expected to be reviewed but there is no promise that they can or will bring them back.
