“It’s Not Who I Am Underneath, But What I Do That Defines Me.”- Batman, Batman Begins (2005). In the case of the character Batman/Bruce Wayne, that’s a good thing since the character has been re-cast seven times. This time the role has landed with Robert Pattinson in the starring role of the caped crusader with Zoe Kravitz in the leading lady role of Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman). Due to the fact that Catwoman had such a large, important role in the movie, Zoe Kravitz seemed to co-star instead of be in a supporting role to Robert Pattinson. Also notable were antagonists Colin Farrell’s role as the Penguin and Paul Dano’s role as the psychopath named the Riddler. They both made great bad guys and I hope to see them in future DC movies.

The narrative behind the story in The Batman has some similarities with past stories, but also some important differences. It begins with Bruce Wayne’s character being withdrawn from society due to the death of his parents, which is a story told many times. However, The Batman does not dwell on this loss like some other movies, but what happens as a result to Bruce Wayne’s character and what happened to his father before he tragically died. In a way, the story is a mystery to unfold a crime that happened before his time. As that mystery unfolds, you learn more about the inner-workings of Gotham City’s politics and greed.

Since no one seems to really die in this Batman movie (Batman doesn’t typically ever use a gun), the story is left open at the end for more installments in the future. I would give this movie 3.5 stars out of 5. The movie was entertaining and gave a promising glimpse as to what the revitalized DC universe may have in store. I would say that they have given Batman a good foundation to begin a new storyline with Pattinson’s refreshed new character. I also think that Pattinson has been given the opportunity of a lifetime to put his personal spin on a very complex character! Hopefully, he doesn’t waste this momentous opportunity.
