We all have our specialty drink that we order from Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts, whether it be a vanilla bean Frappuccino or a simple iced coffee. But of course, these drink requests change with the seasons, and fall is reserved for our limited time flavors that cannot be taken for granted.

Starbucks, the revolutionary, stereotypical coffee shop where drinks are overpriced yet somehow, people find the money to continuously go. When fall arrives, even though the leaves don’t change around here, the menu at Starbucks is telling enough of the season change. Just the smell of the coffee shop symbolizes the season of pumpkins, apples, cinnamon, etc. So, what is the extremely popular fall order? Pumpkin spice. In some way, shape, or form, pumpkin spice makes its way into your Frappuccino, coffee, tea, or latte. In fact, because the flavor is so popular, Starbucks follows a list of preparations in order to be ready for what they call “Pumpkin Spice Latte Season.” Their first step- starting back up their PSL Twitter account. Yes, this is the pumpkin spice latte Twitter account where the announcement of when the drink will return to the menu is eagerly awaited. Memes are made, jokes are told, and pictures are posted, all depicting the intensity of waiting for the return of the beloved PSL. But pumpkin spice is not the only fall menu favorite. Senior Caroline Clawson is not a big fan of the coffee. She says, “My favorite fall drink would have to be the Caramel Apple Spice for sure.” This is steamed, freshly pressed apple juice and cinnamon syrup, topped with sweetened whipped cream and caramel drizzle. And if you prefer cold beverages, it also comes as a Frappuccino. This year Starbucks is also offering a new maple pecan flavored drink.

Dunkin Donuts, the rivalry team, does not stand defenseless in the coming of fall. They too have fall flavors. Though they do not have very much of a variety when it comes to different types of drinks, they have their pumpkin spice flavor available for all of their iced coffees, coffees, and lattes and this year, they have introduced the maple-pecan flavor, as well. The release of these drinks is a weighty business decision, knowing when the perfect time is to start selling them. This year, Dunkin Donuts released their fall flavors before Starbucks, reigning in the revenue from the individuals who just could not hold out any longer. Senior Izzy Platis favors Dunkin Donuts due to it being the more economically reasonable choice. She says, “Dunkin is much better. You get more coffee and it is cheaper than Starbucks.”

Whether it is Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks, the arrival of fall sparks a need for new drinks in the hearts of all coffee, latte, Frappuccino, and tea lovers. Pumpkin spice, caramel apple, or maple-pecan, the decisions grow each and every season. What remains constant, however, is the demand for these drinks to return to the market as soon as possible each and every year.
