Christmas is the time of the year that so many people look forward to. It’s as if we just suffer through the rest of the year so we can reach the joy and happiness that goes along with Christmas. One of the best parts about Christmas is getting presents. Sure, Christmas is about more than material objects and is about love and family and other stuff, but the presents are what get people excited. Well, that is, good presents get people excited.

Every year, bad gift-givers are a plague and constantly spreading their germs of bad gifts. A good majority of us have fallen victim to these bad gifts. However, some of you may live in peaceful bliss and receive everything your heart desires. That’s great, but bad gifts are more common than you’d might expect. From stocking stuffers to huge mystery box sized presents, bad gifts can come in all sizes.

One of the worst gifts you can receive is something that you don’t need or something that will never come in handy. When good intentions are made, sometimes that means a gift that is not too impressive. Senior Gitana Garcia had to experience the unfortunate gift of something that was useless. Her gift was a pencil organizer. She said, “I am annoyed because I know my pencils are disorganized, but that doesn’t mean have to be told that.” She also mentioned how she doesn’t really need a pencil organizer. So, before you purchase a present for someone, make sure that that person actually needs or can use that present. Otherwise, it just doesn’t turn out great.

Giving gifts can sometimes be hard because you are spending money on someone else when you could be spending money on yourself. That being said, sometimes the money you spend on someone else is actually the same as spending money on yourself, as senior Andrea Garcia found out. As Andrea was telling this story with distress clearly marked on her face, she said that “my sisters bought a Polly Pocket kit for themselves but gave it to me as a gift and then stole it back a couple hours later.” Now, that sounds pretty iconic to me, but it is still a bad present nonetheless. Another tip: when you buy a gift for someone, make sure it is actually for them and not for yourself.

I also had asked my sister what the worst gift she ever received for Christmas was. The answer was simultaneously hilarious and sad. “I received a roll of toilet paper,” is what she said. But then she added, “From you.” So, turns out I had given my sister a roll of toiler paper as her Christmas gift, an event which I had completely forgotten about. Although I am pretty sure I actually bought her a nice gift, the gag gift was still funny. Toilet paper is never a good gift for Christmas, so don’t give it to anyone.

In my 17 years of celebrating Christmas, I have received many gifts, good and bad. My mom decided sometime in the past few years that basic human necessities made good stocking stuffers. Due to this, every Christmas I get my stocking down and grab what’s in it. Every year, there is shaving cream and razors and tissues. If I’m lucky, I get body lotion or foot cream. I love my mom, but those just aren’t presents. While I usually get most of what I asked for, getting razors in my stocking has always seemed weird to me. I mean, I guess it’s a good thing that I don’t have to spend my allowance on razors, but it still feels weird.

So, Christmas has bad gifts along with good ones. However, no matter how bad the gift is, the person giving it to you cares about you (or should, at least) and thanks should always be given. Yeah, we have all received gifts that are kind of iffy, but we still should be appreciative of where they came from.
