Recently the famous Kim Jong Un, supreme leader of North Korea, has once again attempted to impress the world with his advanced science and missile technology but once again failed to do so. On Sunday, April 16 the Un ordered the test of the country’s latest attempt to advance their missile arsenal in Sinpo, a port city in eastern North Korea. Sinpo was also the site of a ballistic missile test earlier this month in which the projectile fell into the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea. This missile, like the other tested earlier, failed, reportedly blowing up almost immediately after launch. United States officials do not believe the missile had intercontinental capabilities, but since the rocket blew up so quickly after launch limited data was collected on the missile. South Korean and US intelligence officials are trying to determine what type of missile was used Sunday, but initial reports said it could be a medium-range missile, a range of about 1000 to 3000 kilometers, according to a White House foreign policy adviser.

This missile was launched a day after Kim Jong Un put on a display for the world of his military arsenal on North Korea’s most important holiday, The Day of the Sun. Pictures on state television showed thousands of soldiers marching in formation alongside tanks, balloons and enormous crowds, as well as Kim Jong Un watching the parade from a box.

North Korea’s most recent missile test and the others conducted before it have caused rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula. The US Navy dispatched the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson strike group to the region last weekend, and Trump said this week that if China can’t rein in North Korea’s nuclear program, the United States will. With tensions so high and the United States talking about stepping in, these are scary times. Hopefully solutions and agreements can be met before the North Koreans achieve nuclear capabilities and start what may be the next World War.
