Over the Super Bowl weekend popular new wave rapper 21 Savage was arrested and detained by ICE. The agency arrested him on the claims that he is an “unlawfully present United Kingdom national.” This took everyone by surprise. The last rapper anyone expected to not be a US citizen was 21 Savage. He carries the persona of someone born and raised in Atlanta, he has been shot, robbed, and everything in between. 21 has never spoken of his past in the UK and carries absolutely no accent.

21 Savage’s lawyer released claims saying he has overstayed his work visas and was left without legal status to no fault of his own. 21 has applied for a U visa, which is reserved for crime victims, and has never hidden his immigration status from authorities. He is held in lockdown 23 hours a day and allowed a daily 10-minute phone call. Many people call for the injustice of the arrest because it seems cruel and an act of intimidation. Ordinary citizens and celebrities alike are infuriated. Rapper Jay Z has gone as far as hiring 21 a lawyer and legal team out of his own pocket.

ICE’s reason for the arrest seems to be more about humiliation because of the strict crackdown they have on him. ICE even released an official statement saying “his whole public persona is false. He actually came to the U.S. from the U.K. as a teen and overstayed his VISA.” And while this sheds new light on his past, it is also shedding light on the little attention given to black immigrants and their deportation that is normally given no public attention. 21 Savage’s arrest is making news everywhere celebrities are standing up using their voices and hundreds of memes are being made. Many feel this will backfire on ICE because instead of humiliating the rapper, they have now given him publicity and a spotlight while also putting a face on the issue of black deportation. With the public on 21’s side and legal teams hired by people like Jay Z, it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
