On a recent trip to the local pet store, Pets n’ More, with senior Tori Valby for research on our very informative print story, “The Best Fish To Get For Your Dorm Room,” I was dazzled by the stunning array of fish on display but became even more intrigued by the multitude of fish names that I have never heard of before in my entire life. With a little brother who is obsessed with fishing, I thought I was pretty cultured when it came to naming fish species. However, this assumption proved incorrect upon walking into Pets n’ More! Here are three of the strangest fish names I have ever heard of.

  1. Yoyo Botia Loach (pronounced YO-yo BOH-tee-uh LOW-ch): When I read the name “Yoyo Botia Loach” there were no words or images that even came to mind that would vaguely hint at what such a creature would look like. Fittingly named however, this small white fish has a pattern of brownish-black “Y’s” and “O’s” along its sides. Apparently it is a type of fish native to northern India and Nepal, but they seemed right at home at the pet store.
  2. Axolotl (pronounced ACK-suh-LAH-tuhl): Okay technically this one really isn’t a fish (it’s an aquatic salamander) but its name earned it the right to be on the list. I think the people at Pets n’ More misspelled the name on the tank (Axoloti), so hopefully they miswrote the price, too. One little axolotl is $54.94! The harder the name, the higher the price?
  3. Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa (not even gonna try): This mouthful of a fish name was not actually present at the store but upon researching weird fish names this guy tops the list for obvious reasons. Its name can’t even be pronounced! This fish is more commonly known as the reef triggerfish and is the state fish of Hawaii.

I never knew that fish had such exotic and unpronounceable names before I visited Pets n’ More. If you have a pet fish, I hope you have considered such names as Bubbles or Goldie rather than of one of these tongue twisters. The next time you are at a pet store, consider stopping by the fish aisle to see firsthand what crazy fish names are on display!
