Thanksgiving is a holiday that is commonly, as the kids say these days, “slept on.” Inconveniently placed between the two most popular holidays, Thanksgiving is often thrown aside. After Halloween the fall spirit still lives on, but everywhere you go Christmas has begun. It is as if Thanksgiving is completely skipped and forgotten about, even though it is just as important as other holidays.

Halloween has just come and gone, bringing spooks and cavities to kids across the country. The next holiday in the lineup we all have to look forward to is Thanksgiving. Students are given a week off school to spend time with family, maybe vacation, and prepare and cook the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Afterwards maybe go out Black Friday shopping and score some deals on the hottest trends. This year I walked into the mall November 4th expecting it to still have a fall theme present. I was astonished to see holiday decorations and hear Christmas music playing already even though Halloween was only but a few days ago. The way our society is moving today, Christmas is pushed to start earlier as it the money-making season for shops. Everyone has to buy gifts for loved ones regardless of what holiday they celebrate. While Black Friday sales used to be pushed more than Christmas, advertisers seem to be approaching the season with Christmas spirit almost as if to remind people they will have to start their holiday shopping. It puts pressure on buyers to get it while it is cheap.

Not only is Christmas pushing Thanksgiving out, but Black Friday has changed quite a bit in recent years. Most stores would start sales and open store doors around 5 or 6 AM on Friday morning. Now most Black Friday sales are on the Thursday, Thanksgiving, as stores are targeting door opening sales earlier. This tactic I believe unfortunately works. Families finish their lunch or dinner feast, clean up the dishes, and then find themselves full and bored with nothing to do. Thanksgiving is now combined with Black Friday, chopping the holiday in half and causing it to become more about shopping and sales then purely focusing on family.

All in all, Thanksgiving seems to be getting more and more forgotten and is an important holiday celebrating our country’s history. Stop sleeping on Thanksgiving and start prioritizing it!
