A step up from the normal ice cream shops, Paciugo serves the best gelato in the area. Even though it is located on Beach Dr. in downtown St. Pete, the heart of the shop is authentically Italian. It is always bustling with locals and tourists alike, but the friendly staff always makes lines that go out the door go by in five minutes. Small and quaint, Paciugo’s is packed with a variety of flavors made all kinds of different ways. Its’ smooth and creamy taste melts on the mouth no matter the flavor. Every batch of gelato is freshly handmade every day, using all-natural ingredients. It is made from whole milk and typically has 70% less fat than traditional ice cream. They go beyond the customary chocolate, vanilla and strawberry flavors with ones like coffee mocha swirl and raspberry cheesecake. There is at least twenty different flavors to choose from and the best thing is they have the option of picking up to three (depending on the size cup). The regalore (4.79) lets you choose up to two and the grande (5.49) allows for up to three flavors. My staple favorite to choose is the pistachio almond and frutti di bosco (which is strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries). Other flavors include American black cherry swirl, coconut cream pie, violet, Panna Cotta (wedding cake), tiramisu, pumpkin cheesecake, and mink cookies ‘n milk. Flavors do vary depending on when you go or what season it is, so there is always something new to try. They even have sorbets like mango passionfruit and tutti frutti. Currently they have something called a Paciunicorn, where they use birthday cake flavored gelato covered in rainbow sprinkles topped with a sparkly covered waffle cone, creating a cute and yummy unicorn. Besides gelatos, they do sell coffee, smoothies, and shakes. Paciugo’s unique and endless combinations of flavors really make them stand out above the rest.
