Are they that good?

After week eight, the NFL has one undefeated team left, the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are led by the front runner for MVP, quarterback Matt Ryan. They have won close games and blown teams out. The real question is are they actually that good and how long will they stay undefeated?

The Falcons have beaten the Chargers, Panthers, Redskins, Raiders, Eagles, Chiefs, and Broncos. Matt Ryan has led the charge with 17 passing touchdowns and has thrown for over 2,000 yards. There is no debate that Ryan is the leader of the team. Senior Mark Salem said, “The Falcons are the real deal this year. Matt Ryan will continue to dominate with his sick wide receivers.” Michael Turner is the leading rusher with 415 yards and three touchdowns. With Ryan throwing the ball a majority of the time, Turner doesn’t receive that many touches. The Falcons defense has been solid as well, allowing only 130 points in the first seven games while scoring 201 points. Thomas DeCoud leads the team with four interceptions.

Only one team in NFL history, the 1972 Miami Dolphins, has gone undefeated and won the Super Bowl. A couple teams have gone undefeated during the regular season and lost in the post season. Most recently the 2007 New England Patriots went undefeated until they lost in the Super Bowl. Senior Doug Rovello said, “I will always remember when the Giants beat the Patriots to ruin their undefeated season.”

As the season continues, we will have to see if the Falcons can keep this up. There are a couple tough opponents left on their schedule. They still have to play the Cowboys, Giants, and Cardinals. The Giants have been very hot lately, so this is the team that could ruin their undefeated season. If the Falcons continue to play this well, though, there will be no stopping them and Matt Ryan will win the NFL MVP.
