New York Mets All-Star pitcher Jacob Degrom just recently became the first MLB pitcher since 1913 to allow three runs or less in 25 straight starts, breaking Dwight Gooden’s record for the Mets of 24 games . Degrom has been absolutely dominant this entire season and despite a very confusing win-loss record of 8-8 he boasts a jaw dropping 1.68 Earned Run Average and 230 strikeouts with 25 games left in the season. Since 1968 only two other players (Zach Greinke,2015; Dwight Gooden,1985) have posted an ERA that low over an entire season. With such great stats it is truly a terrible thing that the team around him on the New York Mets give him no chance to actually add to his win category. His run support of just 3.51 runs a game is skewed by the few games the Mets scored eight compared to the many they scored three or less. He undoubtedly is a leading candidate for the NL Cy Young award with the composition of Nationals dominant ace Max Scherzer and Phillies young ace Aaron Nola. Scherzer has an ERA of 2.28, which is considerably higher but along with 260 strikeouts. Nola has an ERA of 2.23 with 188 strikeouts although these stats aren’t the only factors that go into Cy Young voting, Wins and losses are completely irrelevant due to the fact that the Mets aside from Degrom are straight up a dumpster fire. While all are deserving of the award the fact that Degrom has been able to stay on record breaking pace all year despite the complete lack of support from his team and amid all of the trade talks about him getting to an actual contender is truly amazing. Degrom truly deserves to be traded to a team where he can live up to his potential and be rewarded for it and not be in 4th place with a 62-75 record.
