Brandon -The art of journalism is one of commitment and dedication to the craft. Most importantly, journalism is a powerful tool that empowers the informed. Every major journalist starts somewhere. For us, that place is here, East Lake High School, under the tutelage of the great Mrs. Barbieri. For us, the Talon has been a place of instruction, honing our skills as journalists to put forth the most well-constructed and informative pieces. For us, the bi-weekly web stories and competition for publication in the monthly print edition has been the facility through which we sharpen our writing skills. Twenty-four years it’s been since Mrs. Barbieri took over this position, taking her thousands of students under her wing and building them up to be the great correspondents we have the potential to be.

All except one.

Katie Alvarez, senior at East Lake High School, has been missing for quite some time.

Connor and I took it upon ourselves to discover the true reason behind her disappearance. Our first step was to seek out the people closest to her. Here are our discoveries:

-Jacob Stamas :

What’s your relationship to Katie?

“I’m not sure anymore, she just sort of disappeared. We are dating, but I haven’t seen her in so long.”

When was the last time you saw her?

I don’t even remember, last I saw her was this weekend I think.”

Do you have any stories that could relate to this disappearance?

Well she has a tendency to disappear a lot. She’s often missing from school. Who knows where she could be.”

Do you have any theories on where she went/ her status?

“Not too far into knowing Katie I realized she had a large income of money. I didn’t ask questions, I just accepted the free food and jewelry. But after awhile I got suspicious and started asking questions. She claimed to have this thing called a job, but I don’t think that’s real. A few weeks ago, the check stopped clearing, and she said she didn’t have a so called “job” anymore. She talked about another thing called “graduation,” which I’m sure is code for fleeing the country, so my theory is she was deep in the hole and owed some people some money. She needed an out. THERE’S YOUR STORY (Jacob is sobbing at this point) ARE YOU HAPPY NOW?”

-Kat Tansky

What’s your relationship to Katie?

Best friend”

When was the last time you saw her?

“I haven’t seen Katie in a fat minute.”

What was the last thing you guys did together?

“The last thing we did was go island camping together about three weeks ago. Maybe she’s still on the island? I haven’t seen her since.”

Do you have any ideas as to why she has been missing from school?

“Maybe she’s been working; I think she works at Hot Tuna but I’m not really sure.”

Connor- It seems that no one knows where Ex-Journalist Katie Alvarez has gone. However, through extensive research myself and fellow investigator Brandon have developed a theory that is GAME CHANGER. Through a mixture of hacking, researching and good old-fashioned bribery, we learned some startling statistics. In the first grading period, Katie missed 20 class periods of her second period Newspaper class. This is completely understandable and isn’t uncommon in the Senior class, but the second grading period is unprecedented. Katie missed 45 days of second period, as in all of them. She turned in nothing, like a phantom whose existence lives through rumors of other journalists. The matriarch of East Lake’s Talon, Mrs. Barbieri, has run the newspaper for 24 years, and she has never encountered a beast like this. Katie disappeared without a trace from our newspaper, and our hearts, and through hours of theorizing, Brandon and I have raised the question- Was Katie ever even here? She’s disappeared without a trace, maybe she was nothing more than a rumor. Many struggle to remember what she looks like, and the attendance in second period supports us. Was she just a collective figment of imaginations? Did she exist at one point early in high school and her disappearance has been covered up? Or did she just graduate early and skipped second period after first marking period? We may never know, but Brandon and I will continue to search and hope that she returns.
