Recently, Netflix’s new movie, Bird Box, gained immense popularity by its audience, depicting of a time where people chose to blindfold themselves to keep them from committing suicide because of an unknown cause. The thriller received an impressive 45 million views streaming within the first week! Starring Sandra Bullock, the actress won fans over with her moving performance, struggling to protect two small children she named “Girl” and “Boy.”

Unfortunately, the response was not quite what Netflix expected. Videos of people blindfolding themselves while attempting to complete difficult tasks began to circulate shortly after the movie’s release. Last week, a 17-year-old driver form Layton, Utah crashed her car while driving blindfolded with her friend. Two cars were involved in the crash, but thankfully, no one was injured. The Layton Police Department said this act was a “predictable result.” “The Bird Box Challenge” became viral, with people filming themselves doing dangerous tasks while blindfolded. Examples of such videos showed people repeatedly slamming into furniture on a bike, a woman nearly burning herself on a heater, and even toddlers running into walls. This challenge could end up resulting in serious injuries.

On January 2nd, Netflix warned its viewers not to replicate the movie, “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.” Hopefully, people take this to heart and stop conducting such foolish acts, as the one thing most detrimental to society is not an unknown force like that shown in the movie, but rather, human stupidity.
